Wow - Upwork has just fallen to the temptation of charging freelancers to bid. This is reminiscent of Thumbtack - the failing handyman company.

In case you don't know, Upwork is struggling to make a profit. And since they're a public company the pressure is really on them to turn things around. So what do they do? They do what all desperate gig companies do - they turn on their workers and try to suck another dime out of them.

Upwork says on average most freelancers will spend $5.15 a month on Connects. But, that's what they always say in the beginning. Wait six or eight months and that'll go up to $10 a month then $20 then $100.

Thumbtack has actually gone up to $150 PER CONNECT in some categories.

And keep in mind - this is on top of your 20% fee you pay them for work you do get. And this new charge is due and payable regardless of whether or not you actually get the job. Yep, that's right folks. You have to pay this fee whether you get the job or not. That's a real nice way for them to scam us isn't it?

Upworkers on twitter are outraged.

So, Upwork KNOWS this is a problem and they're "actively" looking for ways to solve it. But in the meantime they're going to suck every last time out of workers' pay even though Upwork has not provided a way to ensure that people posting jobs are genuine.

They could charge job posters for posting... that would put a stop to all the fake posts.
